Avril Corroon

Goldsmiths MFA Award
2019/20

Avril Corroon’s videos, performances and sculptures explore situations and sites where precarious conditions in the neoliberal city have become everyday. She re-presents these examples in a humorous and satirical form. Such examples have included: a video examining the ‘Landlord’ as monster, cheese made from toxic household mould, performing on a city rooftop as the Airbnb company logo, and covertly filming staff treatment in the service industry where she works. Using the circumstances she finds herself in as an entry point, she seeks to interrogate the wider affects of neoliberalism faced by many of the millennial generation.

Avril was selected for the 2019/20 Goldsmiths MFA Award by artist and writer David Batchelor, Natasha Hoare (Curator, Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art), Lea O’Loughlin (Co-Director, Acme) and Paul Bayley (Head of Residencies & Awards, Acme) from a shortlist of six MFA graduate artists at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Goldsmiths MFA Award

The Goldsmiths MFA Award is a partnership between Acme, Goldsmiths, University of London and Jane Hamlyn. Aiming to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice, the award includes a generous bursary, rent-free studio space and a mentoring programme. Recipients of Acme’s Early Career Awards Programme work from shared studios in order to encourage an environment of peer support and critical dialogue.
